good film, thank you! now my perspective on this film has changed a bit since I was young. I heard the original novel of this film is non-fiction story of Miss.Duras.

I saw this film almost 20 years ago when it first came out. Great perfornances,... beautiful camera work...and probably the most realistic sex I've ever seen in a non-porn film.

This is one of the sexiest films I have ever seen, watched it a few times now. Especially the scenes in the beginning where he awkwardly flirts with her in the ferry and in the car, and later when she kisses the car window. I admit I used the move where he puts his hand next to hers and touches and caresses her little finger with his own to my first girlfriend. The sex scenes are pretty sexy too, and the dialog and narration is top quality.

This film has very fantastic scenes. I later learned that the story here was in 1920s. I am sure that at that time girls had little sized panties what the girl is having here. At that time underwear worn by girls were somewhat big and covering much of their back. Anyway the scene Chinese lover removes her school uniform -- white frock -- and then removes her panties for sex brings me to my school days. In our country, school girls mostly wear white frock as their school uniform and having white panties under it. As a boy who attended to a mixed school I have seen such white panties worn by my classmate girls. As our country is having a warm weather, girls used to widen their legs to provide some ventilation to their thighs and private area covered by white frock. At several such occasions, we boys used to just bend a little pretending to pick up a pen dropped by us and enjoy girls inner thighs and white cotton panties worn by them which were visible through their widened legs. Our classmate girls knew that we were watching them like that. But they did not show that they noticed it as it would lead to humiliations for them. Other scene is that the elder brother of the girl picks up a pair of white cotton panties of his sister, smells it and blames her that it has Chinese smell. In our country we normally never put our hands to panties of our sisters or even any other girl.

This is very beautiful film about a beautiful and complex loving relationship. Have anyone has an idea on which time this story was based. I think it was in late 50s or early 60s when Vietnam was a French colony.
