During Edo-era (1603-1868) there was a famous pirate called Tsumujikaze Goemon ( つむじ風剛右衛門 ) in Wakayama ( not confused with other famous thief, Ishikawa Goemon from mid 1500). Tomogashima consists of 4 islands : from left(west) Okinoshima, Torajima, a tiny island inbetween Okinoshima and Torajima is Kamishima and the eastern tip is Jinoshima. Okinoshima is the main island and actually accessible to Torajima when the tide is low. This building was built around 1941 for the military purpose of detecting sonar wave of submarines and underwater boat movements.
